Dramatica
is a theory of story based on the concept that every story has a mind of
its own - its own psychology and its own personality. The psychology of
a story is determined by its structure and its personality is developed
through the storytelling. This model of a single human mind that
describes the structure of every complete story is called the Story
Mind. What's more, this Story Mind model can be applied to other areas
than the analysis and creation of fictional stories such as psychology,
sociology, and even to areas in which we organize what we observe into
patterns, such as quantum theory and medicine.

The
Dramatic Circuit |

A "dramatic circuit" is
behind every act, scene and character interaction in a story.
Similarly, a "psychological circuit" is behind every thought
and feeling we experience. The mind is a machine made of processes. If
we treat each process as an object (similar to
"object-oriented" computer programming) we can build
circuits from these objects by arranging them in a "quad" or
schematic. Each quad has four "process-objects" that
function as a Potential, Resistance, Current, and Power (or Outcome).

"Dramatic Circuit" concept can be equally applied to human
psychology in the real world, both in regard to individuals and also
in regard to the overall psychology of any group of any size as
well.

diced" to apply to both larger and smaller stories and also

A
storyform is a closed system. It pre-supposes chaos does not exist. It
creates a single "flash photograph" of a state of mind (the
Story Mind) with all the attached vectors of potential which drive it
forward. This story structure convention is designed to make a focused
argument promoting a particular attitude or course of action as the best
to use in the scenario under study. But in the real world, chaos does
exist. Fortunately, there are two means of dealing with it through the
use of Scalability in the Dramatica model. One is to expand the scope of
the argument spatially, the other is to track the effect of chaos on the
argument temporally.

nested dolls, the processes of our minds fit within other larger groups
of processes. Each of these, in turn, can be seen as an overall process
that is part of an even larger group. The fractal psychology concept is
essential to the Dramatica theory of story, and can also be applied in

group, organization, society, culture, or even at the national level.

Behind
the Quad (1 of 3) |
 |
The
"Quad" is the basic unit or module from which the Dramatica
Story Structure is built. It represents relationships among four items,
such as Mass, Energy, Space and Time or Knowledge, Thought, Ability and
Desire. The Quad is functional for both direct interactions of the four
items, but also for relativistic interdependencies, such as
"Space/Time" or "Desire/Ability". The Quad form is
such a useful way of organizing data in a balanced system that it can
enhance our abilities to understand patterns in such other diverse
fields as psychology and physics.

The
"Quad"
is the basic building block of Dramatica story structure. In this
installment, we attempt to "get a feel" for how the quad works
and what it really means as a foundation to explaining the "nuts and
bolts" of quad theory.

elements) with them when they move, and how those operations should be
oriented in the model.

Dramatica deals solely with understanding and creating stories, one
aspect of the theory suggested the possibility of psychological
implications as well. Eventually, we succeeded in developing a complete
theory of mind that stretches from lower-level neurology to higher level
psychology, and more important, answers the questions, "What is
mind?" and "How does self-awareness work?"

Mental
Relativity is concerned with two principal aspects of the brain:
neurology and biochemistry. It is the contention of the theory that
self-awareness in not found in either aspect, but in the relationship
between the two. Further, each of these two aspects consists of two
distinct sub-systems.

The
Mind is a machine made of time. It must be in motion to exist. The mind
does not exist in the physical world, but as a result of the physical
world. Taking this all together, think back to a time when you drifted
away on some mental tangent until suddenly you were jolted back to
"reality", and you realized that several minutes had passed
unnoticed. During that lost period, your mind simply did not exist for
it had ceased to be in motion. The moment some external stimulus
triggered a response, however, the physical nature of your brain
re-created your mind more or less as it was when it ceased. More
precisely, it was not your whole mind that ceased to exist in the
example above. Rather, it was only that quality of the mind called
self-awareness.

The
Story Mind theory extends beyond story with its model of psychology.
This model is culture independent and can be scaled to any size from analyzing
a single individual to a society or even a nation. In this segment I
apply Dramatica's model to the two party system with thoughts on how
they appear to be splitting into four parties and how and when this may
happen.
