Who’s There?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Congratulations! \u00a0You\u2019ve completed the first part of your journey toward a completed novel. \u00a0It was a heck of a lot of work, but it is all about to pay off.<\/p>\n

From here on out, we\u2019ll be drawing on material you\u2019ve already created. \u00a0What\u2019s more, each step from this point forward is far less complicated, requires far less effort and is shorter to boot!<\/p>\n

In this step, for example, we\u2019re going to look for characters in the material you\u2019ve already created. \u00a0You don\u2019t have to invent anything new. \u00a0In fact, it is important that you don\u2019t!<\/p>\n

Read through your revised synopsis from Step 10 while asking yourself \u201cwho\u2019s there?\u201d \u00a0Make a list of all the characters\u00a0explicitly\u00a0called for in your story, as it is worded.<\/p>\n

To be clear, don\u2019t list any characters you have in mind but didn\u2019t actually spell out in your work \u2013 just the ones who actually appear in the text.<\/p>\n

You may have given some of these characters names. \u00a0Others, you may have described simply by their roles in the story, such as Mercenary, John’s Wife, Village Idiot, etc.<\/p>\n

If a character does not yet have a role, give them one as a place-holder that more or less describes what they do, who they are related to, or what their situation is.<\/p>\n

If a character does not yet have a name, don\u2019t hold yourself up trying to think of one now. \u00a0Well have a whole step devoted to inventing interesting character names down the line.<\/p>\n

For now, just list the characters actually spelled out specifically in your synopsis as it stands.<\/p>\n

An Archeologist<\/p>\n

Painless Pete –\u00a0A Dentist<\/p>\n

A Clown<\/p>\n

A Freelance Birdwatcher<\/p>\n

Do NOT include any characters you have in mind but didn\u2019t actually mention. \u00a0Do NOT include any characters who may be inferred but aren\u2019t actually identified. \u00a0All those other characters will be dealt with in the next few steps.<\/p>\n

So, get on with it and answer the burning question, \u201cWho\u2019s There?\u201d<\/p>\n
