{"id":2352,"date":"2017-06-05T10:35:06","date_gmt":"2017-06-05T17:35:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/storymind.com\/blog\/?p=2352"},"modified":"2017-09-11T11:33:37","modified_gmt":"2017-09-11T18:33:37","slug":"2352-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/storymind.com\/blog\/2352-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Know Your Story Points: Overall Story Domain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Excerpted from our <a href=\"http:\/\/storymind.com\">Dramatica Story Structuring Software<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Every story is set against the issues which arise from a single problem.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The problem itself will fall into one of four broad categories.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you want the problem to grow out of a situation, then choose <b>Situation<\/b>;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>if you want the problem to emanate from an activity, then choose <b>Activity<\/b>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you want the problem to evolve from fixed attitudes and states of mind, then choose <b>Fixed Attitude<\/b>; and if you want the problem to result from the characters&#8217; manipulations and ways of thinking, then choose <b>Manipulation<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Overall Story Domain:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/b>The scenario against which a story takes place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>THEORY<\/b><\/span>:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>An author cannot successfully make an argument promoting a solution until he or she has identified the Problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">In stories, Problems can be identified as falling into four broad categories: Situations, Activities, States of Mind, and Manners of Thinking.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These categories are named by the four Classes, Situation (a situation), Activity (an activity), Fixed Attitude (a state of mind), and Manipulation (a manner of thinking).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2022 <b>Situation<\/b> represents an External State,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2022 <b>Activity<\/b> an External Process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2022 <b>Fixed Attitude<\/b> is an Internal State and<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2022 <b>Manipulation<\/b> an Internal Process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Since they are related, all four of these Classes will figure in every story as the Problem works its influence into all areas of consideration.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, only one Class will ultimately prove to be both the source of the Problem&#8217;s roots and therefore the place it must ultimately be solved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>USAGE<\/b><\/span>:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Overall Story Domain is the throughline which describes how all of the story&#8217;s characters have been brought together.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>By choosing this Domain, the author sets the background against which the story will be told.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Therefore, its influence is gently felt throughout the story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A SITUATION story deals with an unacceptable situation &#8211; one in which the external environment is seen as problematic.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This could be a job situation with poor working conditions, being trapped in a sunken ship, waking up as someone else, living next to an orphanage that keeps you awake at night with its screaming waifs or any other intolerable state of affairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Often, the best way to see a Situation Overall Story is in terms of the Types below the Class of Situation:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">The Past, How Things are Changing, The Future,<\/span> and <span class=\"s1\">The Present.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These Types will be of primary importance to all the Overall Characters in a Situation Overall Story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A ACTIVITY story employs an activity that needs to arrive at a solution.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This might be the effort to steal the crown Jewels, win the love of your heart&#8217;s desire, make the Olympic team, or raise the money to buy the orphanage and evict all the screaming waifs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Note that if the existence of the orphanage is the focus of the story, it is a Situation (Situation) Domain.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, if the effort to buy it is the focus, it is a Activity (Activity) Domain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Often, the best way to see a Activity Overall Story is in terms of the Types below the Class of Activity:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Doing, Gathering Information, Understanding,<\/span> and <span class=\"s1\">Obtaining.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These Types will be of primary importance to all the Overall Characters in a Activity Overall Story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a like manner, the Fixed Attitude Domain reflects a state of mind and the Manipulation Domain describes a mental activity (or manner of thinking).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Fixed Attitude Domain stories might be about prejudice, a lack of self-worth (if it is a fixed view), or a refusal to see the value of someone&#8217;s desires.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Remember that, as an Overall Story Domain, these fixed states of Mind will be the source of the problems that everyone in the Overall Story deals with.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This would be an Overall view of problems of fixed states of mind, and not looking at how it feels to have these fixations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Often, the best way to see a Fixed Attitude Overall Story is in terms of the Types below the Class of Fixed Attitude:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Memories, Impulsive Responses, Innermost Desires,<\/span> and <span class=\"s1\">Contemplation.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These Types will be of primary importance to all the Overall Characters in a Fixed Attitude Overall Story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">MANIPULATION Domain supports stories where people take too many risks, are egocentric, or make light of serious situations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Overall Stories of this Domain will look at the effect of a person&#8217;s or persons&#8217;
